La Bounty Restaurant

Open air thatched roof La Bounty restaurant in bora bora | boraboraphotos.com

The La Bounty restaurant is just a short walk from Matira Point and serves up eclectic French cuisine and other local island favorites. If you happen to be staying at the MaiTai Polynesia or one of the Sofitel resorts nearby this family owned restaurant is easily accessible and offers an excellent alternative to the more pricey hotel restaurants. If you happen to be staying further away, don’t worry, make a reservation, and the La Bounty will arrange a taxi to pick you up.

The restaurant has an open-air thatched-roof with beach sand floor similar to the famous Bloody Mary’s restaurant. The staff is friendly, and the service is decent, but it depends on how busy they are. The location is right along the main road but the restaurant sits on the mountain side, and unfortunately, it does not have a lagoon view.

Jason ordered the Maitai (1300 XPF/ $15 USD) and I ordered the Pina Colada (1300 XPF/ $15 USD). The decorations were a nice touch to start our dinner experience.

fresh made pizzas served here at La Bounty favorite | boraboraphotos.com

Before planning our Bora Bora trip, we had heard of many reviews online that stated this was a good place for pizza. So to begin our meal, we split a pizza (1950 XPF/ $22 USD) as our appetizer. The portions here are large so come hungry.

Chef Special at La Bounty gratin of seafood, fish and lobster | boraboraphotos.com

We didn’t know if we would have the opportunity ever to get back to the La Bounty restaurant, so we ordered the “La Specialite Du Chef” (Chef Special). This was the Gratin of seafood, fish, and lobster which was served with rice and vegetables (3800 XPF/ $43 USD). This was incredibly flavorful but for the lactose intolerant beware of the heavy cream sauce.

Fare Manuia Restaurant & Bar

Front entrance to the Fare Manuia Restaurant in Bora Bora.

Along the main road that circles the island of Bora Bora is where you will find the Lucky House Fare Manuia Restaurant & bar. Located just steps from Matira Point, the restaurant is a mix of indoor and outdoor areas for seating.

One of the specialties of the Lucky House is their delicious pizza made from a large brick oven right near the entrance. We even noticed a couple of locals riding up on scooters and grabbing a box of pizza to take home.

The restaurant also makes some great Chinese and French cuisine. During our experience, the waiter recommended the special of the day, and Jason couldn’t refuse. It was a ground-up pork meatball with fresh homemade pasta and tomato sauce ($26 USD). We also decided on a Hawaiian Pizza made with tomato sauce, mozzarella, ham, pineapple, olives, and dusted with a pinch of oregano ($17 USD).

Fare Manuia restaurant special of the day.

The restaurant is popular and located near Matira Beach, which gets a lot of foot traffic during the day. I assume the guests of the InterContinental Le Mona Resort and Hotel Matira only walk across the street and get food/drink here rather than spending much more to eat at their hotels.

When planning your trip to Bora Bora, having options on places to eat is one of the perks when staying on the main island. Aside from the main village of Vaitape, the only other area in Bora Bora with shops and multiple restaurant options is located near Matira Beach. There are also a couple of resort accommodations, all within walking distance.

Pool with lounge chairs at the Fare Manuia bar.

In the back of the Fare Manuia restaurant is an excellent-sized pool and lounge chairs for relaxing in the sun. Jason and I enjoyed the back of the restaurant after our meal.

The bar area adjacent to the pool is beautiful and spacious, with a full outdoor bar and flat-screen TVs playing different soccer games worldwide. Of course, we tried one of their  Mai Tai cocktails which cost about $14 USD. If you want to try this place for lunch or dinner, give the Fare Manuia restaurant a call and make a reservation, they will gladly provide a free taxi to pick you up.

The bartenders are happy to whip up signature cocktails such as a Polynesia Mai Tai or Pina Colada as shown above which cost around $15 USD. Fresh local juices are used to make these drinks, however, if hard alcohol is not your thing, they also stock local beers such as Hinano.

One of the signature dishes of Restaurant Le Saint James Bora Bora is the “Polynesian Plate by Le St James” which is raw tuna served with coconut milk, half-cooked red tuna, red tuna tartare, and red tuna carpaccio. At around $28 USD, it’s a great way to sample many of the restaurant offerings.

Matira Beach Restaurant

Note – this restaurant might be permanently closed.

Inside view of the Matira Beach restaurant.

The Matira Beach Restaurant is located at the famous Matira Point, which has the most beautiful beach on the main island of Bora Bora. The restaurant is raised on stilts with spacious rooms to accommodate group dining sessions or just an intimate romantic dinner.

When Jason and I visited Matira Beach restaurant for lunch, we just finished jet skiing in the lagoon and were looking for a good meal afterward. On our visit, we met the owners, Chef Tuaiva and his wife Morgiane who were both very kind, and the service was excellent!

Red walls are an Asian influence view of the restaurant Tiki Bar.

When stepping foot in the Matira Beach restaurant, you first notice the Asian decor, which is a pleasant welcome because it is so different from the other Bora Bora restaurants. There is a Tiki Bar with a wide selection of cocktails and light snacks to accompany your favorite drink. Their custom cocktails are specially prepared with local ingredients.

Mahi Mahi burger at Matira Beach restaurant.

The Matira Beach Restaurant offers a lunch snack menu and a sushi menu in the evening. For either menu serving, the restaurant sources local specialties for their meals and imports exotic red meat from New Zealand.

For lunch, we were craving a Mahi Mahi burger with french fries, and Jason decided to wash his meal down with a cold Hinano beer. Their selection of fish was fresh and delicious, and we want to go back in the future and check out their sushi menu.

Bora Bora Yacht Club

A view outside the Bora Bora Yacht Club restaurant and bar.

The Bora Bora Yacht Club is just outside the town of Vaitape, by a short drive. A restaurant, a bar, and yacht services are all in one excellent location. Founded in 1972, the Bora Bora Yacht Club has been a perfect place for a good meal while watching a fantastic sunset over the lagoon.

Jason and I made reservations for 5:30 pm, allowing us to have drinks on the dock before eating. Keep in mind that dinner is not served until after 6:00 pm.

Bora Bora Yacht Club drinks Pina Colada and Mai Tai.

I ordered a Pina Colada ($16 USD), which was made of rum, coconut ice cream, and pineapple juice, and Jason ordered the Mai Tai ($16 USD), which was made of rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, mango juice, and pomegranate.

Sunset view from the Bora Bora Yacht Club .

The sun sets directly across the restaurant, and we timed our dinner perfectly. You sit on the dock over the blue lagoon, with open air and a gentle breeze. It was breathtaking. All the sailboats in the marina make for an incredible backdrop.

Mahi Mahi with truffle cream sauce.

I ordered the Fillet of Mahi Mahi with truffled cream sauce ($36 USD). Delicious!

Bora Bora Yacht Club rib-eye steak and french fries.

Jason ordered the Rib-eye steak with peppercorn sauce ($35 USD). I had a bite. It was good!

Bora Bora Yacht Club coconut cake.

We both split the Coconut Cake ($11 USD) at the end of the meal. It was an excellent way to wrap up the evening on a sweet note. If you want to try the Bora Bora Yacht Club for dinner, make a reservation, as they can arrange a taxi to pick you up at your resort.

When doing your honeymoon or vacation research, you’ll notice the Sunset Hill Lodge Bora Bora is ranked #3 in popularity. Travelers have given this lodge/pension/hostel a massive boost because of the value and personal touch that the owner provides.

Gerard takes pride in his Bora Bora hillside retreat with a comfortable environment and incredible value. On TripAdvisor, you will read what a fantastic host he is. He provides extensive knowledge of the island and offers excellent prices for kayaking trips to the outer motu (islands) surrounding Bora Bora.

Aloe Cafe restaurant

Outsude view of Aloe Cafe restaurant in Bora Bora.

Aloe Cafe is located in Vaitape which is the main city of Bora Bora island. Just across the street from the Chin Lee grocery store and tucked in the back of the Le Pahia Shopping Center is where you will find the Cafe. Here, you can sip a cold drink of your choice while checking email or surfing the net and, at the same time, get a delicious lunch or breakfast.

Restaurant Aloe Cafe is well known in Bora Bora for its delicious fresh pastries and homemade ice cream. They have a selection of sweet foods that attract a steady stream of locals from around the island daily to see what’s new.

Spaghetti Bolognaise served at Aloe Cafe in Bora Bora.

Jessica and I were both delighted to enjoy a nice meal at a decent price. We were a little tired of eating fish, so we decided to change it up. I got the Spaghetti Bolognaise ($18 USD), which was delicious!

Aloe Cafe's version of an open-faced bacon burger with egg.

The bacon burger with a fried egg ($18 USD) was also pretty good. It was served with a nice sizeable fresh salad.

Two Aloe Cafe drinks Maitai and Pina Colada.

Aloe Cafe also serves an excellent selection of drinks, from hard-to-get Belgian beers to mixed tropical cocktails. We tried the Mai Tai and Pina Colada (Both $13 USD). They were served in large glasses and packed a punch. There are not too many choices for food/drinks in Vaitape, but Aloe Cafe is worth checking out.

Flying into Bora Bora Airport

Private jet parked at Bora Bora Airport.

There are no direct international flights to Bora Bora because the runway is not very long. Most all travelers have to fly into the main international airport in Papeete on the island of Tahiti and then make a transfer in a smaller aircraft to reach Bora Bora airport. From Tahiti, it is roughly 50 minutes of flying time on board Air Tahiti Airlines before going to the jewel of the Pacific.

If you’ve got the cash for a private plane, then you are in luck. Bora Bora airport can accommodate several types of private jets. Although even if you’re flying from the United States, I believe a stop is still required in Papeete for customs before you can fly to Bora Bora.

Air Tahiti airlines plane on the tarmac after flying into Bora Bora Airport.

Air Tahiti is the only domestic airline in French Polynesia. They fly to Bora Bora and several other islands each day. To get the best flight deals, it’s best to be flexible with your travel dates or book in advance. Above, you can see an Air Tahiti flight unloading bags. Passengers must walk up the planes as there are no gates at Bora Bora airport.

Check-in counter at Bora Bora airport.

This is the check-in counter at Bora Bora airport. There is no security, so lines tend to move pretty quickly. The airport is currently under renovation, and plans are underway to improve the looks and feel.

Resort shuttle boats waiting for passengers.

Outside the Bora Bora airport are resort shuttles waiting to pick up and drop off tourists and honeymooners. The St. Regis boat (far left) is one of the bigger shuttle boats that welcome travelers and can begin the check-in process at the hotel directly from the boat.

Are you not staying at a luxury resort? No problem, there is an even larger shuttle boat that takes travelers on a 20-minute ride to the Village of Vaitape for free. This is convenient for those staying on the main island.

La Villa Mahana restaurant in Bora Bora is hands down the best restaurant on the island. Owned and operated by Chef Damien Rinaldi Dovio and his wife. Sofitel romantic dinner for two

Sofitel Sunset & Champagne Jason & Jessica on a bench | boraboraphotos.com

Bora Bora is the island for lovers. Many of the visitors are couples who are newlyweds, honeymooners and those who are celebrating decades of wedded bliss. The Sofitel Private Island Resort offers some of the most intimate and romantic options for guests and visitors to the resort.

One of the most memorable moments at the Sofitel Private Island was the exclusive romantic dinner for two. Jason partnered with the incredible staff to create the perfect “surprise” evening on the last day of our stay to celebrate our second wedding anniversary.

Perfect sunset champagne toast | boraboraphotos.comThe romantic dinner for two started with the most incredible sunset at the “point of view”, the highest hill on the island. There are multiple locations on the top of the motu to sit back, relax, and enjoy the sights of the island.

The staff escorted us to our private deck, where we enjoyed refreshing glasses of exquisite champagne and canapés and watched the sun slowly dip into the horizon.

Sofitel romantic dinner for two dinner table with mount otemanu view | boraboraphotos.comOur Sofitel romantic dinner continued with a private candlelit table, toes in the sand with breathtaking views of Mount Otemanu. We could not wait to begin the culinary adventure, with island-inspired dishes prepared by the innovative chefs at the Sofitel Private Island.

The romantic dinner was the perfect way to reminisce about all of the great moments of our trip while having an intimate and unique dining experience. We loved how attentive the servers were. However, they did not rush us through the evening. We were able to take our time and enjoy each bite of our incredible meal.

Bora Bora airport shuttle to Vaitape

Bora Bora airport shuttle to Vaitape.

For those that want to reach the main island of Bora Bora, there is a free shuttle service run by Air Tahiti from the airport to the main dock in Vaitape. The boats leave for Vaitape village about 20 minutes after your flight arrives, and it takes about 20 minutes to reach the marina in Vaitape.

Bora Bora airport is tiny and located on a motu which is a small outer island. It is only accessible by boat. Most honeymoon or vacation travelers staying at the big resorts such as the InterContinental, Four Seasons, St. Regis, etc… already include a boat transfer directly to their resorts. So they will not need a Bora Bora airport shuttle to Vaitape.

Inside view of seats and passengers taking the boat shuttle to and from the airport.

When picking up your checked-in bags, you will see a sign that says “Boarding Shuttles For Vaitape (Main Island).” Follow the arrow, and it will take you outside to the airport shuttle which is the biggest boat in the airport marina.

Since the airport is small you can’t miss the boats, and the staff at the airport speaks several languages and are friendly, so don’t hesitate to ask them for directions.

Return trip to the Sofitel Private Island

We’re back! My wife Jessica and I love Bora Bora, we originally honeymooned at the Sofitel Private Island in 2011. We had such a great time on that trip that we told ourselves we must return someday.

Bora Bora Sofitel private island welcome dock.

Fast forward two years later, we saved up enough vacation time from work and started discussing travel ideas. Bora Bora was at the top of the list, but we couldn’t decide whether to try a new Resort or stick with what worked last time. Choosing a Bora Bora resort is a tough choice. How much money you are willing to spend is often the most significant factor.

Ultra luxurious resorts like St. Regis and Four Seasons are great if you can afford them, but they are pretty isolated and try to keep you on their property. What if you wanted to go to a grocery store or try a variety of other restaurants on the island? Of course, it’s possible, but most resorts have specific shuttle schedules to Vaitape, the central City of Bora Bora. If you miss the shuttle or if the resort you’re staying at doesn’t offer a shuttle, then a boat taxi is your only option, and those things are not cheap.

Sofitel Private Island over water bungalow with lagoon view.

Jessica and I chose the Sofitel Private Island again, and here’s why. First off, we prefer a more intimate resort experience. The Private Island has only 20 luxury overwater bungalows and 11 island villas. This means no long-distance hikes from your bungalow to your resort’s main dining or activity area. If you’ve checked out TripAdvisor reviews, you might have seen people complain about the distance they need to travel to get to their room. That’s not a problem at the Sofitel.

The Sofitel Private Island has a free daily boat transfer to its sister hotel, the Sofitel Marara Beach Resort. Day and night, all you need to do is walk to the dock, and there is a boat waiting to take you on a 5-minute transfer to the main island. This is a great convenience because once you get to the mainland, there are multiple restaurants, shops, and a market, all within walking distance. The most popular beach in Bora Bora, Matira beach, is also just 20 minute’s walk away.

Manu Tuki restaurant at the Sofitel Private Island resort.

Daily breakfast is served at the Sofitel Private Island in the large hut, which you can see above. This is also called the Manu Tuki restaurant, which serves lunch and dinner. The staff is incredibly friendly, and because the resort is not too big, they often know your name on the first day. It’s a nice touch and makes you feel like you are more than just a room number.

At the top of the Sofitel Private Island with Mount Otemanu in the background.

Most of the resort properties in Bora Bora are flat such as the outer motu surrounding the main island. The Sofitel Private Island is very unique in that the Island has a pretty decent hill which is excellent for viewing.

Following the trail up the hill leads you to an area with 360-degree views. This spot is often popular around sunset, with couples sitting in lounge chairs and toasting champagne to the sun.

Enjoying Air Tahiti Nui Business Class meals

Air tahiti nui airlines business class meals | boraboraphotos.com

When choosing to fly business class to French Polynesia on Air Tahiti Nui Airlines your vacation truly begins upon stepping foot aboard the aircraft, not just when you land in Tahiti. My husband Jason and I were able to experience the high level of comfort, hospitality and culinary extravagance during our travels from Los Angeles to Papeete (Tahiti). We’ve dedicated this article to show you what Air Tahiti Nui business class meals look like.

The flight team provides a warm welcome, or “La Orana” from the beginning of the flight until the very last moments, creating an atmosphere of tropical relaxation. Once you’ve taken your seat on the plane, you are immediately offered a glass of champagne, Mai Tai or fresh fruit juice. Food is my passion so I was delighted to see Air Tahiti Nui airlines attention to detail by giving us a delicious preview of the local island cuisine on route to our destination.

air tahiti nui airlines business class meal with ahi tuna | boraboraphotos.com

Ahi tuna and bresaola with a fresh salad and Chardonnay vinaigrette. We both enjoyed this refreshing hors d’oeuvre, which included sesame crusted tuna which was perfectly seared. Tender pieces of sweet air dried and aged salted beef (bresaola) was also served with creamy fingerling potatoes and crunchy green beans. With the smell of warmed rolls filling the air, I could not wait to slather on the butter and begin my culinary feast.

Shrimp, scallops and mussels on Air Tahiti Nui airlines | boraboraphotos.com

Shrimp, scallops and mussels in saffron cream sauce with spinach rice. Jason selected for his main course a lighter seafood entree. The shrimp were still succulent and the mussels and scallops tender and moist. He dipped the seafood in the creamy saffron sauce and the rice was fluffy and fragrant.

Beef stew in Madeira sauce on Air Tahiti Nui airlines | boraboraphotos.com

Beef stew in Madeira sauce accompanied by chive mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables. The beef dish was extremely tender and packed with flavor from the tomatoes, wine and spices. The potatoes were nice and creamy with a delicate onion flavor from the chives. The beef stew was an ultimate comfort food dish, and I was very happy with my selection. Both entrees were served with slices of blue cheese and brie, perfect with our warm rolls.

Assortment of desserts on Air Tahiti Nui airlines | boraboraphotos.com

Mini mango cake, chocolate eclair, white chocolate raspberry mousse verrine, green apple sherbet and fresh seasonal fruit salad. We were extremely spoiled with our dessert course. We could not believe how many artistically designed French inspired desserts we were offered, I was in heaven! Each dessert gave a different flavor explosion and texture, from sweet to tangy, and velvety to cool. I especially enjoyed the green apple sherbet, the perfect way to cleanse the palate.

Chicken salad with fresh greens on Air Tahiti Nui airlines cold light dinner | boraboraphotos.comChicken salad with fresh greens and miso sesame dressing. Towards the end of the flight we were served another meal, thankfully a lighter one. The chicken salad was a nice and healthy option, however we still indulged on a strawberry tart with chocolate filled crust and more yummy cheeses.

I was honesty not expecting such an elegant experience dining on an airplane and was very pleasantly surprised. We have dined at Michelin star restaurants, and I felt that the level of service on our flight was reminiscent of being at a fine dining restaurant. The flight team provided white napkin service with each meal, placing down fresh white linens and silverware.  There was even glass cups, ceramic plates and even cloth napkins with the Air Tahiti Nui logo (a tiare flower), which I thought was a very sophisticated touch.

We did not leave the flight hungry, I actually can’t remember any moments without something delicious to eat or drink. I’ve included the beverages menu below if you want know about their selections to choose from.

Here’s the Wines and Champagne List:

Champagne Brut, J.M. Gobillard & Fils, Cuvee Prestige, Millesime 2008

  • This well-balanced Champagne is made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes and matured for at least four years. The nose is intense with notes of dried fruit, almond and hazelnut, and the palate is long and generous.

Macon-Villages, Chenons, Chardonnay, La Maison Bleue, Domaine Janny, 2011

  • This Chardonnay from Burgundy has a delicate nose with aromas of white roses, acacia, honeysuckle and citrus. It is fresh, pleasant and dry yet fruity on the palate with hints of pine, quince and fennel in the finish.

Sauternes, Reserve du Ciron, Calvet, 2009

  • This straw yellow white is made mostly from Semillion grapes. It has an intense nose with notes of nutmeg and is well-balanced, fleshy and fresh on the palate. This wine can be an aperitif and pairs well with foie gras, white meats, polutry and desserts.

Air Tahiti Nui flight from LAX to Tahiti

Jessica & Jason in Business Class
Air Tahiti Nui plane parked at LAX gate waiting to board.

Two years ago, while sitting on our Sofitel Private Island overwater bungalow on the last night of our Bora Bora honeymoon, Jessica and I promised to come back and visit as soon as possible. We were both very excited when preparations began for our second trip back to French Polynesia.

The first thing on our list was to lock in the Air Tahiti Nui airlines flight from Los Angeles to Tahiti, and the rest started to fall into place. Bora Bora has a small airport, and large commercial planes can not fly directly there. You must fly into Papeete (Tahiti) and transfer to a smaller plane to visit Bora Bora.

Our journey got a kick into overdrive before it even started. We had scheduled an 11:40 pm Friday night flight, and by checking Air Tahiti Nui’s website, – (there is a dedicated page for flight disruptions), we realized that our flight was canceled and moved to Saturday. With a quick phone call to an Air Tahiti Nui sales agent, we found an earlier 4:30 pm flight available and that if we made it to LAX in time, the tickets were ours!

Before our flight departed, the airline was gracious enough to compensate us with a free night at the InterContinental Resort once we got to Tahiti. Jessica and I were happy to take the early flight out, we didn’t have a problem spending extra time on vacation.

We recently posted an article a couple of months back about Air Tahiti Nui upgrading its planes with new inflight entertainment systems and fresh cabin design. The contemporary decor is nice and bright and more reflective of the colors of Polynesia. There is even artwork and floor-to-ceiling photos on the walls between the cabins.

For comparison, the above photo shows Moana Economy Class, but on this trip to Tahiti, we were able to travel in-style by flying in Business Class which Air Tahiti Nui calls their “Poerava” section, which translates to “Black Pearl” in Tahitian.

As we entered the aircraft Jessica and I were personally guided to our seats and offered a warm washcloth infused with Tiare flower fragrance. There were sounds of island music playing in the background as we familiarized ourselves with our surroundings and opened our travel gift boxes.

Just like kids with a new toy, we started pushing buttons. Jessica wanted to see all the angles her seat adjusted to while I started playing with the large touchscreen display in front of me. I couldn’t believe there was an actual remote control for the entertainment system, but it made perfect sense when your seat was reclined, and you couldn’t reach the touch screen.

After a few minutes of playtime, we were offered drinks and a snack before takeoff. We had the choice of Champagne, MaiTai, Mojito, Margarita, Pina Colada, and an assortment of other cocktails. As you can see from the picture below, we decided on Champagne.

Overall, a very smooth flight from Los Angeles to French Polynesia. Roughly 8 hours of flying time from start to finish, we left at 4:30 pm and arrived in Tahiti at 10 pm local time.
